Microsoft Faces ClickOnce App Installation Issue After Recent Windows Update

In the realm of software updates, unforeseen bugs can often arise, and Microsoft’s recent non-security update, KB5028244, is no exception. Released towards the end of July, the update was intended to bring a variety of enhancements and fixes to the Windows operating system. However, it also introduced a series of issues, ranging from UWP and Win32-related problems to BitLocker and printer malfunctions.

Among the notable bugs associated with this update, one stands out prominently – a significant video codec issue that affected Windows 11 and other Windows versions. Acknowledging the gravity of this issue, Microsoft has taken measures to address it. But now, the tech giant has confirmed yet another bug stemming from the same update, and this time, it concerns applications installed via ClickOnce deployment.

Microsoft’s Health Dashboard provides a detailed explanation of this new bug, along with its associated workaround. After installing KB5028244 or subsequent updates, applications deployed using ClickOnce may trigger installation prompts, even when these ClickOnce apps are already installed and designated as “trusted.”

To temporarily circumvent this issue, Microsoft recommends uninstalling the affected ClickOnce application and then reinstalling it. For a more permanent resolution, the company has introduced a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) mechanism. However, it’s important to note that this resolution might take up to 24 hours to propagate automatically to consumer devices and non-managed business devices.

For enterprise-managed devices that have been impacted by this issue, Microsoft offers an additional solution in the form of a special Group Policy. This Group Policy, found within Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates, can be downloaded for various Windows versions, including Windows 10, version 22H2, Windows 10, version 21H2, and more.

It’s clear that even with diligent testing and quality control, software updates can sometimes lead to unexpected complications. Microsoft’s response to these bugs demonstrates its commitment to swiftly addressing user concerns and ensuring a smoother experience for its vast user base. As technology evolves, such incidents serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in maintaining a seamless and secure digital ecosystem.
