X Announces API Overhaul

Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced further changes to its API (Application Programming Interface) that could have cost implications for developers, particularly enterprise clients. This move follows API pricing changes made by X in March, which increased costs for developers utilizing the platform’s data.

In a recent announcement, X stated its intention to discontinue certain legacy API endpoints and migrate others to the new v2 API. This change is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to modernize its API platform and continue supporting the latest X features with the v2 API.

X also disclosed that it is retiring the legacy Essential and Elevated tiers of API access, requiring customers using these tiers to transition to the new options. This transition will take place within the next 30 days, and developers are encouraged to enroll in Free, Basic, Pro, or Enterprise tiers to maintain access to the v2 API.

Previously, certain calls using v1.1 API endpoints, particularly for enterprise customers, did not count toward their monthly quota. With the latest update, these calls, such as retrieving tweets, will now contribute to the monthly limit. X offers enterprise plans at various price points with tweet limits of 50 million, 100 million, and 200 million per month, costing $42,000, $125,000, and $210,000, respectively. Additionally, X is discontinuing features like user search.

This year, X has taken steps to limit developer access by blocking third-party apps and implementing significant changes to its API structure. The latest changes appear to be aimed at encouraging high-value customers to upgrade to higher tiers of API access.

As part of its broader rebranding efforts, X also announced changes to how news links will appear on the platform. This includes hiding headlines and summary text from posts containing news links.
